Pomegranates

Rimonim #6 and #1

Rimonim or pomegranates are one of the seven species of products that the spies brought back to the Jewish people for evidence of the "goodness" of the land they were about to enter. We use Rimonim in the festivals still celebrated in Israel. In modern times, nutritionists have discovered the many health benefits of pomegrantes.

Har Sinai

Giving of the Torah

What a dramatic moment! The Jewish people had gathered at the foot of Mt. Sinai to receive the 10 commandments. They witnessed the thunder and lightning and were appropriately awestruck with the experience. This small abstract attempts to capture that raw emotional experience through vivid colours and shapes.

This small painting was created as part of a display for Shavuot as it is one of the 7 species of the land of Israel celebrated in our 3 festivals. Of course, it is also the staple of the Israeli wine industry. The original photo reference was from Neot Kedumim, the Biblical nature site near Modi'in.

Eitz Etrogim

An etrog is an important part of the Sukkot celebration. It is an unusual fruit, somewhat like a lemon, but it grows year round. People will spend considerable time, effort and money to obtain the most perfect etrog they can get. The etrogim are found in the Biblical nature reserve at Neot Kedumim.

Wildflowers

Shortly after Tu B'shevat, the birthday of the trees, which officially marks the beginning of the new growth cycle for nature, one can see wildflowers blooming in the fields and on the rocky hillsides in Israel. I particularly enjoy going for a walk on Titora Hill in Modi'in where I can see all the new wildlflowers emerging.

Rose in Bloom

Roses are sophisticated, intricate arrangements of petals that fold,overlap and extend as they bloom. I love the delicate changes of colour in this process. This small watercolour is my prototype for others I will create by client request. This painting will remain in my personal collection.

Eretz #2

If you have read the history of the beginning of the State of Israel, particularly the book "1948" by famous historian, Benny Morris, you will appreciate this view of Hwy. 1, from the Monastery at Latrun. I have tried to capture the sense of danger for the traffic heading to the Jerusalem hills.

Field Daisies

This painting done in watercolours is an abstract to fully enjoy the medium. The white is the white of the paper and the colours have flowed and mingled in the background. This painting would be a perfect complement to a room with a summer palette as it has some neutral or "greyed" colours in the background.

Flower Power

This was a watercolour I painted on Yupo paper which has a plasticized surface that allows more flow of paint and water. It is a more delicate rendering because of this flow, although the colours are still quite distinguishable. It would be very pleasing with soft or pastel wall colours.

Roses are my favourite flowers both delicate and dramatic in clusters of colour.

Roses B'Eretz

Many gardens and the parks in Modi'in have roses growing in abundance. Unlike my former home in Toronto, I can now enjoy the beauty of roses all year round and I often stop to marvel at their beauty as they hang over a wall or spread up the side of a building.

In a Heartbeat

Life can change dramatically in just a heartbeat. The combination of complementary colours of red and green emphasize the connection of life, growth and vitality.

Grapes #1

Grapes hanging over a trellis make one want to pick them. I painted this small painting specifically for a show on the theme of "Shavuot" as grapes are an important part of all our festivals. This is a small acrylic on canvas and would be particularly nice in a kitchen or dining room area.

Moshavi

Eretz #1

The gentle, peaceful rolling farmland was a surprise to me when I came to Israel. Somehow, I had only images of a desert landscape fixed in my mind. The early settlers turned the wasteland into a fertile and beautiful landscape through Moshavim and Kibbutzim. Eretz Yisrael contains an abundant variety of crops and landscapes.

Early in spring, I took a walk on Titora Hill and came across this little group of bright red flowers bursting forth among the rocks and new foliage. The greens are soft and new and a perfect, quiet foil for the vibrant, sassy flowers dancing with their own energy in the gentle breezes.

Oveinu Sheba Shamayim
